What is happening to the other 400,000 shares that were sold/unbought?




When I look at the daily share trades of a company I get confused by the sometimes big disparity between the buys and sells, eg number of shares sold 500,000; number bought 100,000. What is happening to the other 400,000 shares that were sold/unbought?

Normally all shares can be matched up. But if the broker can’t match the trade they have to buy it with the extra shares/money that they have lying around.
