Financial institutions are just like any other investments out there. You can use ratios such as the PE ratio and Book value to get an idea of how strong a company actually is. Also there is the Texas Ratio that can be used on banks to tell how much stress they have taken on.

All and all it really depends on what your goals for the company are and how much you need to know about a company before you feel comfortable enough to get into it.
