You can buy both if you want. That is the whole idea behind the straddle and the strangle.

If the stock makes a big enough move in one direction it can be very profitable, if the stock doesn’t make a big move in one direction in a short time period this strategy will probably lose money.

It can be good if you think a stock will make a very big short term move but you don’t know which direction it will move in.
