Buying shares much cheaper than their price?

Can you buy shares cheaper than their price?

On a Virtual Stock Exchange website, somebody bought a 20 shares of Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A) for $97.57 each, when at the time of the purchase the price of each share was $100,450.

Another person done the same with this large difference in prices, buying 10 shares of BRK.A for $84.25 each when the price at the time was actually $99,090 each.

How is that possible?

I don’t think it is possible, but if you do find a way that you can do it in real life tell me and we’ll both become millionaires. :)

You might be able to if you found someone who literally owns the stock certificate and for some reason is willing to sell it to you for less than the value of the stock. But the odds of that happening are pretty low.

Another way would be to buy a call option which lets you buy a stock at a specific locked price in the future. But that takes on the risk because you have to buy the call option and if the stock doesn’t go up above the strike price you would lose money.

Thank you. And by the way, that person did accum millions in less than a year on the virtual stock exchange! That's what drove me to find out more.
