NYSE History (timeline)

The NYSE history all starts in 1792 that was when 24 New York Stock Brokers and Merchants signed the Buttonwood Agreement creating the New York Stock & Exchange. Here is a NYSE timeline for events that occurred after that point.

NYSE history

1792 - Bank of New York became the first bank to be listed.

1835 - First headquarters burnt down in the Great Fire of New York of 1835.

1864 - Open board of stock brokers merge with NYSE.

1903 - Exchange moved to 18 Broad Street.

1918 - Pneumatic Vacuum was first created to ship tickers to and from other exchanges.

1929 - Black Tuesday (Oct 23) and Blue Monday (Oct 26) lose investors 26 billion dollars.

1930 - NYSE is the largest exchange holding more foreign issues then all other US markets combined.

1943 - Trading floor opens to women.

1953 - NYSE trading volume reaches 900,000 it is the last time trading volume will be bellow $1 million.

1967 - first women becomes a member.

1976 - first Foreigner becomes a member.

1979 - The New York Futures Exchange is established.

1986 - Black Monday (Oct 19) sees the second largest one day percentage drop of 22.6%.

2006 - NYSE merges with Euronext creating the first Trans-Atlantic stock exchange.
