NASDAQ History
Want to know the NASDAQ history, how the NASDAQ works or even, what is the NASDAQ? Well you have come to the right place because this page is full of information about the index. Let’s began with a brief history of NASDAQ.
The index started in 1971 as the first electronic stock exchange, instead of having to manually place trades it does it all through computers.
It was created in order to give over the counter stocks (or stocks that did not meet the criteria of other exchanges) a place where they could be listed on.
In its first day it traded there where already 2,500 companies listed in it, today that number is over 3,700. Over time it split into two groups the NASDAQ National Market (consisting of larger companies) and the NASDAQ small cap market (consisting of smaller companies).
In 1994 the index officially surpassed the NYSE in trading volume and in 1998 it merged with the American stock Exchange to form NASDAQ-AMEX.
It has never stopped growing and today owns several stock exchanges throughout the world and on Nov 8, 2007 it bought the Philadelphia stock exchange (the oldest in the US) for $652,000,000.
Here is the NASDAQ chart history dating back to 1971.
The NASDAQ is located in New York City and stands for the “National Association of Securities Dealers Automatic Quotations” but that name is rarely used.
Its ETF tracks the performance of the NASDAQ 100 or the 100 strongest companies in the index. The chart below shows the real time data of the Index calculated every 5 minutes throughout the trading day.
